Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium Bicycle Race May 4th

Published Apr 11, 2008

Begin the day with the Annual Mayor’s Ride – Riders enjoy a 20 & 40 mile route. Too long? No-worry – there’s a shorter route. Over 100 families rode the 6 mile route in 2007 and this year’s event appears to be drawing heavily for all the rides.

At 11 A.M. gather in the spectator area for the thrills and chills of the Professional & Amateur Criterium Bicycle races. Racers speed around the course to prove they are “the best.” The course is a 1 mile flat, fast course with 5 left hand turns and one steady gradient hill of 3% on the backside of the course. Once again, the Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium has made the National Racing Calendar, an honor since only 18 Criteriums were selected out of more than a thousand held each year. Several top professional teams have added the 2008 Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium to their 2008 schedule. Held in Roswell Historic District, the Criterium offers spectators the perfect spot to watch the excitement of professional bicycle racing.

Younger members of the family will want to sign-up for the Children’s Bicycle Safety Rodeo, managed by the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell and supported by Roswell Bicycles. Children who complete the Rodeo are also allowed to participate in the Youth Series Races of the Criterium. While not the fastest races of the day, the youth races are certainly entertaining.

The Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium will be participating in the Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Road Series. The LAJORS program promotes quality junior and espoir age bicycle racing while providing opportunities for the success and advancement of developing riders. The program will increase the quantity and quality of USA Cycling licensed junior and espoir riders in the United States, creating a larger pool of talented athletes from which to draw National Team athletes. The program is part of a USA Cycling “athlete pipeline”. This “pipeline” provides a clear path for riders to follow from beginning racing experiences through training camps to National Teams.
