Eagles Competitive Middle School Basketball Returns

Published Aug 21, 2008

Johns Creek Baptist Church will again run a competitive middle school basketball program for girls and boys in grades 6, 7 and 8. This program caters to the unique needs of middle school students and helps them transition to a more competitive environment.

This season, there will be two options to choose from; Eagles and Eagles Select. Eagles Select will be a more advanced version of the league. Both groups are travel teams and will be playing other metro Atlanta area teams.

The Eagles program is unique in that it ties in several components to truly help strengthen youth from the inside out.

  • Speed, Agility and Conditioning program once per week with Coach Brandon Richey, formerly a UGA Conditioning coach. A highly competitive player needs to develop quickness, proper running technique and propulsion for jumping. This program develops those skills
  • Middle School trained chaplains who deliver weekly devotions to help the player deal with typical middle school issues and strengthen their relationship with God. It also teaches the kids how to win and lose with grace and how to develop leadership skills.
  • Specific position training. This deliberate training ensures that each child is exposed to all the skills they need to succeed in competitive basketball.
  • Full court, high school rules games with AAU referees playing against other competitive teams. You simply cannot learn to develop the aggressiveness you need for basketball without actually playing competitive games.
  • Community involvement with area middle and high school coaches. Last year, we had several middle and high school coaches come and talk to the kids. Their message really drove home the importance of playing with integrity and intensity. It also emphasizes the hard work that goes into successful play.

Eagles Select is a more advance version of the program which plays local feeder, middle school teams and AAU/YBOA teams. The Select program requires a try-out in October.

Johns Creek Eagles are now taking coaching applications for many of the age groups. All coaches are interviewed and selected based on experience coaching, working with middle school children and successful play.

The league is also accepting requests from outside competitive, AAU/YBOA, or feeder teams that would like to inter league with the Eagles or Eagles Select teams.
