The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced that 25 graduating Fulton County seniors also have been named National Merit Scholars. In addition to the prestigious National Merit Scholar distinction, these students earned National Merit scholarships from participating colleges.

College-sponsored Merit Scholarship Winners:

In April and early May, National Merit announced 16 winners that received scholarships from the organization itself and underwriting corporations. Five students also were named National Achievement Scholars, a similar academic competition for African-American high school students. A final round of college-sponsored National Merit winners will be announced in mid-July.

All of the students first were identified through exceptionally high scores on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and SAT. They have a record of high academic performance and are endorsed and recommended by their school principal.

Roswell High School senior named Presidential Scholar

Ishna Sharma, a recent graduate of Roswell High School, is one of 138 seniors nationwide selected as a 2008 Presidential Scholar.

Presidential Scholars are chosen on the basis of academic or artistic scholarship, leadership and involvement in school and the community. The program was established in 1964, by order of the United States President, to recognize and honor the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. In 1979, the program was expanded to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative and performing arts.

During June 21-24, Sharma and the other scholars will be invited to Washington D.C. to participate in National Recognition Week. The week includes enrichment activities and culminates with the presentation of the Presidential Scholars medallion during a special ceremony at the White House.
