18th Annual North Fulton Rivers Alive Festival and River Cleanup

Published Aug 7, 2008

Rivers Alive, Georgia's annual river clean-up, comes to North Fulton on September 27. Sponsored by Keep Roswell Beautiful (KRB), the clean-up will take place from 9 a.m. until noon at Riverside Park. The event will be held rain or shine.

Georgia has more than 70,100 miles of rivers and streams that need your help to stay clean. Individuals, neighborhoods, scout troops, schools, churches, clubs and service organizations are being asked to pull together to make a difference for the Chattahoochee River. Cleanups of the Chattahoochee and surrounding areas will be going on in the week leading up to the event. Volunteers are also needed on the morning of this event for a privet pull (invasive species) at Chattahoochee Nature Center and litter pick ups in surrounding areas.

Everyone is invited to this year’s festival, which will feature interactive educational displays, crafts, environmental demonstrations, the REI PEAK Program and music by Johnny Roquemore. All ages are invited to come celebrate the Chattahoochee River.

All volunteers under age 18 must have the Rivers Alive volunteer waiver form completed and signed by a parent before arriving at the event. The form is available at the Keep Roswell Beautiful website at www.keeproswellbeautiful.org.

The North Fulton clean up is co-sponsored by KRB, the City of Roswell, Keep North Fulton Beautiful, the City of Alpharetta and the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Partners include Harry’s Farmers Market, SuperTARGET, Starbucks, Waste Management, Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell, North Fulton Rotary, Windward Rotary, Buckhead Rotary and Best Western.

Educational Expo participants include Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, Captain Planet Foundation, Ecological Solutions, Environ, National Park Service, Clean Air Campaign, REI, Autrey Mill, North Fulton Hospital, Chattahoochee Nature Center, UGA Cooperative Extension, Roswell Water Department, Southeast Green, GA EPD Outreach Unit, Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and the Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited. The goal of the festival is to increase citizen awareness of non-point source pollution and the need for clean water in Georgia.
