AUGUST EVENTS

Animal Encounter – Additional Summer Time!
Every Thursday and Friday in August at 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. All ages. Learn about the native wildlife living here at CNC through a 30-minute live animal presentation. Guided Hikes
Every Saturday and Sunday in August at 1:00 and 3:00 PM. All ages. A CNC docent guides you on a journey through the CNC trails, using biofacts and activities to spark your “natural” curiosity. Naturalist-Led Canoe Trips
Every Thursday – Sunday in August, 6:00 PM – Dusk
Additional Saturday Trips – 8:30 AM
Ages 6 & up. $30 non-members/$25 members (save $5 per person on Thursday trips). Pre-registration required.
This is a fantastic way to unwind from the daily hustle and bustle of suburban life, or to entertain family and friends. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience one of metro Atlanta’s best-kept secrets! Each canoe trip is led by a CNC naturalist, and offers a unique introduction to the ecology of the Chattahoochee River. Participants are expected to be an active part of this program. Raptor Mealtime
Every Tuesday and Saturday in August at 2:00 PM. Join our wildlife staff or volunteers to learn the in’s and out’s of our raptors’ diets as you join them during feedings. The Clean-Up Crew
Every Saturday and Sunday in August at 2:00 PM. All ages. Head out to the Chattahoochee Nature Center, and learn all about those often misunderstood birds – vultures. Explore the varieties we have in Georgia, as well as the important role they play in our ecosystem. Nature Exchange Day
Saturday, August 2 at 1:00 – 3:00. Ages 4 – adult. For those that participated in the spring Nature Exchange, now is the time to make some more trades!  If this is your first time – come on out to CNC to learn more about this exciting new program. Bring a natural object from your home to show and tell, and get a sneak preview of the Nature Exchange, one of the fun new programs coming to CNC in 2009! Storytime by the River
Wednesday, August 6 at 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Ages 3 – 5. Using books, finger-plays, or crafts, our volunteer storytellers share stories about frogs and toads! Family Canoe Day
Saturday, August 9 from 10:30 – 12:00 AM. Ages 5 & up. $15 Non-Members/$10 Members. Pre-registration required.
You’ve asked for more so we are loading up the summer with this canoeing experience!  Join us to discover the basics of canoeing.  Learn about canoes and how to paddle them.  Then use what you’ve learned as you practice safely on the CNC pond.  Spaces fill fast so register early at scheduling@chattnaturecenter.com or (770) 992-2055 ext. 237.

Early Childhood Programs Open House
Tuesday and Wednesday, August 12 and 13 at 9:45 – 11:00 AM. $5 per family. Pre-registration required.
Come see what the Early Childhood programs are like at the Chattahoochee Nature Center! Xeriscaping
Saturday, August 16 at 9:30–11:30 AM
$15 non-members/$10 members    
Xeriscaping is defined as – “environmental design of residential and park land using various methods for minimizing the need for water use.”  It couldn’t be a better time to implement water saving strategies.  Join Louise Estabrook from the UGA Cooperative Extension – Fulton County to learn about xeriscaping your home landscape.  Ages 16 & up. Family Pond Study

Night Hike

Docent Orientation
Saturday, August 23 at 12:30 – 5:00 PM. Ages 10 and up (children 16 and under must have an adult). FREE. Pre-registration required.

Summer STARLAB
Saturday, August 30 at 12:30 – 1:30 PM. Ages 5 – up. Don’t miss this must-see attraction at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. A naturalist will guide you as you learn about the stars, constellations, and planets that are prominent in the summer night sky in our giant, inflatable STARLAB planetarium. Backyard Campout
Saturday, August 30, 5:00 PM – Sunday August 31, 10:00 AM  
$30 non-member families/$15 member families
Join us as we sleep out under the stars at CNC. We’ll provide space, water, bathrooms & a campfire; you bring the rest. We’ll also get a chance to see the common Nighthawk migration over CNC! Nighthawk Migration - Bird Watching
Saturday, August 30 at 6:00 PM – Dark. Join CNC volunteer and Master Birder, Stacy Zarpentine, for an evening of bird watching and migration. The common Nighthawk migratory route passes right over CNC. This is also a great opportunity to see other native species that are active at dusk. Ages 8 & up.
