Keep North Fulton Beautiful (KNFB) is now accepting used batteries, cell phones, computers and accessories at its Recycling Center, located at 470 Morgan Falls Road in Sandy Springs. The facility is open for drop off 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“In addition to traditional recyclables like paper, plastic, glass and aluminum, we now take used computers and make good use of them,” says Kathy Reed, Executive Director of KNFB. “Recycling your computer is so important because it contains toxic elements like Mercury, Cadmium, Lead, and other poisonous materials that should not be thrown into a landfill.”
In partnership with Rallings Computer Consultants, KNFB works to refurbish all usable computer equipment, and then sells it at a nominal charge to non-profits and schools. "Rallings Computer Consultants is very excited about our partnership with Keep North Fulton Beautiful,” says Dwight Rallings, Manager of the computer recycling division. “We share the same mission of keeping materials out of the landfill, and in addition, we are able to help other non-profits in the process."
If a computer cannot be reused, KNFB recycles all of the materials in accordance with federal and local environmental standards. Hard drives on each donated computer are wiped clean of any data in accordance with the Department of Defense's clean sweep standards, so even the hard drives can be recycled without security risk.
KNFB can also arrange pick-ups for large donations, and can provide support to organize a computer donation drive for any interested club or organization. Each individual or business is rewarded for their good deed with a thank you letter and tax deduction for their in-kind donation.
"This new program makes a strong and positive impact on the community," Reed says. "When you recycle a computer, you protect the environment, contribute to education, and as a bonus, clear out a nice usable space in your home or office where that old computer equipment used to be."
