The much-anticipated 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe is here, and it was worth the wait. It’s drop-dead gorgeous, more powerful and turned-out magnificently.
Under the all-aluminum hood of the 2008 G37 Coupe, a 3.7-liter V6 generates 330 hp and 270 lb/ft of torque, enabled by Infiniti’s VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) technology, a system of continuously-tuned valve lift and timing that maximizes torque in the power band. The bump in displacement results from a 4.6mm-longer stroke. A higher 11.0:1 compression ratio is used, and the redline rises to 7,500 rpm — 500 rpm higher than before. The 24 additional horses (compared to the G35, this car’s predecessor) are quite noticeable thanks to a broad and flat torque curve that peaks at 5,200 rpm.
Impressive as the horsepower is, the 2008 G37 is more fuel efficient (by 2 mpg) than that of the 2007 G35, due engine tuning that optimizes fuel consumption for performance regardless of rev range.
The 2008 G37 Coupe arrives in three models: the base G37 Coupe, the G37 Coupe Journey (a higher trim level) and the performance-oriented G37 Coupe Sport. The Coupe Sport comes with a six-speed manual transmission and big 19-inch wheels and tires, while the base Coupe and Journey include a five-speed automatic transmission and run on 18-inchers.
While there is a base G37 for price shoppers, the G37 Coupe Journey allows you to select the Sport package. The Sport package equips your G37 with sport suspension, quicker 14.7:1 ratio rack-and-pinion steering, larger 14-inch front brake rotors with four-piston fixed calipers, and 13.8-inch rotors in the rear. A viscous limited-slip differential caps off the list of equipment. So-equipped, the G37 has a unique front fascia and aggressive-looking rocker panels. It rides on a set of 10-spoke, 19-inch alloy wheels wearing performance tires in front and rear, which replace the standard G37's 18-inch 50-series all-season tires. The G37 Coupe Sport 6MT model is the best of the range, equipped with both a six-speed manual transmission and the Sport package.
The G37 will tempt you with high-tech options such as a new, optional four-wheel active steer (4WAS). Using signals from the speed- and stability-control sensors, the overall steering ratio can range between 12:1 and 20:1. The hardware consists of a "modulator" in the steering column that adds or subtracts lock from your steering input, plus an actuator that can steer the rear wheels in phase with the front tires up to 1 degree. Infiniti's 4WAS isn't pure steer-by-wire, but it's close.
You’ll drool at the Premium package consisting of moonroof, Bose premium audio system, iPod connection, HomeLink and Bluetooth connectivity. And, you’ll lust for the Technology package consisting of intelligent cruise control and adaptive headlights. You’ll surely be tempted by the Navigation package (navigation, audio system with 9-gigabyte hard-drive for your tunes and a rearview camera).
The Infiniti G37’s pleasing interior also adds much sex appeal. The G37 coupe benefits from all the comfort and ergonomic upgrades lavished on the 2007 G35 sedans. Even the tallest drivers will enjoy an excellent driving position and the generous range of the telescoping steering column. You have your choice of a light “Washi-finish” (the look of Japanese rice paper) or a more traditional African rosewood trim. Aluminum trim bits set the décor off perfectly.
The 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe is a capable, fast, beautiful, and luxurious machine. At a starting price of around $34,000, it is an attainable dream. Given the anticipation and hype surrounding this car, enthusiasts have been gripped by G37 fever for some months now. Well, she has arrived and it’s time for your first date. So settle those nerves and prepare to fall in love at first sight.
