Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts has issued a press release claiming credit for including Big Trees Forest Preserve among the parks that Sandy Springs can purchase from the county once it becomes an independent city.
In an email yesterday, Sandy Springs City Council member Ashley Jenkins decried Pitts’ effort to manipulate voter impressions by naming her – without her permission – in his press release, saying, “the news release is misleading.”
“This is a thinly veiled attempt by Mr. Pitts to recover from the public relations disaster he created by voting to sell Sandy Springs parks to the highest bidder,” said Bill Loughrey, Pitts opponent in the November 7 election for Fulton County Commissioner District Two At-Large position.
Pitts initially voted to sell Sandy Springs parks to the highest bidder and then changed his position in response to the public outcry during an election year.
“This is yet another example of my opponent positioning himself against the best interests of Fulton County citizens,” Loughrey stated. “For example, Pitts stated at a debate before the Concerned Black Clergy that he was not a supporter of Sandy Springs. He announced at a debate downtown at the Atlanta Business League that he would continue his opposition to road funding. He also voted to deny Sandy Springs a liquor license so it could have a victory celebration after its citizens voted overwhelmingly to become an independent city.
“In addition, after agreeing that the overwhelming vote of the Sandy Springs’ citizens settled the incorporate question, Pitts immediately voted to sue the city to cut off services to Sandy Springs taxpayers. Pitts took this action even though the law clearly stated, as the court ruled, that the county was required to provide services to its taxpayers in Sandy Springs until the city assumed those service responsibilities.
“Mr. Pitts is certainly entitled to his views, but it often difficult to ascertain exactly what his views are since he supports both sides on virtually every issue. Like John Kerry, first he votes for it; then he votes against it.
“Mr. Pits seems to believe he can hoodwink the voters by creating an impression of progress with bogus press releases. When I am Commissioner I will focus on issues that benefit all the people and not devote my energies to issues that divide the people,” Loughrey concluded.
